For this double-LP recorded in November , John Mayall gathered together prominent musicians who had played in his bands during the past several years, including Sugarcane Harris, Eric Clapton, Johnny Almond, Harvey Mandel, Keef Hartley, and Mick Taylor. Mayall's compositions aren't all that impressive, but the sidemen frequently shine, especially Clapton.

JOHN MAYALL BACK TO THE ROOTS UNANSWERED QUESTIONS Harvey Mandel: lead guitar Sugarcane Harris: violin He was even a studio sideman with me as far back as the Bluesbreakers Clapton LP of at a time when he was already well known in England through his work in the modern jazz clubs and his roaring tenor and baritone sax sounds.

John Mayall's definitely getting back to his roots here – and he's also getting help from an all-star cast as well! Mayall's vocals and piano are in fine form – almost with a rough-edged Blues Breakers sort of vibe, but sometimes a bit funkier too – in ways that strongly show the evolution of the older Brit blues groove into some hipper, more soul-drenched territory.
